A Homeschool Mom’s Guide to an Unforgettable Stay
As a homeschool mom of six, I have learned that family time does not simply appear on the calendar. You have to create it. You have to carve out moments that pull everyone together and remind you why this season of life matters so much. That is exactly what our fall trip to Great Wolf Lodge did for us. It gave us space to breathe, space to laugh, and space to be together without rushing from one responsibility to the next.
We packed up in our matching Jack O’Lantern shirts and hit the road. The kids were asleep in under fifteen minutes, which felt like a tiny gift all on its own. When we walked into the lobby and saw the magic of Howl O Ween all around us, I knew instantly that this weekend would be one we would talk about for years. Baby Tatum wore his first pair of wolf ears, and I could feel my heart melt right there in the middle of the lobby.
Our Grizzly Bear Suite felt like home
One thing I always tell other moms is that the room you choose matters, especially when you have a big family. We booked the Grizzly Bear Suite, and it was exactly what we needed. There was a living room with a pullout sofa and a television where the kids could unwind. There was a bedroom with two queen beds that gave the older kids plenty of space. There was another bedroom with a king bed that felt like a peaceful retreat at the end of the night. We had two bathrooms, which made getting ready so much easier, and a refrigerator with a sink that was separate from the bathroom area. That little detail made a huge difference because it allowed us to operate like a family without feeling cramped or overwhelmed.
It truly felt like a home base. A place where everyone could settle in, spread out, and feel comfortable.
Paw Passes made everything simple
One thing I would absolutely recommend is purchasing Paw Passes for your kids. For us, they became a guide for everything the kids could enjoy. Instead of trying to remember what was available or worrying about missing something, the Paw Passes kept us on track. The kids loved knowing they had special activities waiting for them, and I loved that it made our days feel organized without being rigid.
I also downloaded the Great Wolf Lodge app as soon as we checked in. It helped me keep track of every event happening throughout our stay. Morning yoga. Trick or treating. Story time. Waterpark hours. The Monster Bash Party. Everything was right there in the app, and it made planning so easy. With six kids, having a clear schedule is a blessing.
Meals that kept us happy and full
We ate breakfast at Timbers Table Kitchen every morning. The kids loved going back for seconds, and I loved that it was quick and easy. There was also a Dunkin’ Donuts nearby (right inside Great Wolf Lodge), which meant I could grab coffee or a little treat whenever I needed a moment.
Dinner at Fireside was one of my favorite parts of the trip. It is a sit-down restaurant where your food is brought to your table, and it made our evenings feel calm and intentional. I loved that we never felt the need to leave the lodge for anything. Everything we needed was right there.
The waterpark was a dream for all ages
The waterpark was where the kids truly came alive. There were areas for every age, which made me feel so at ease. The younger kids had their own splash zone with age-appropriate slides. The older kids had bigger slides and thrill rides that kept them busy for hours. We floated down the lazy river. We splashed in the wave pool. Tru played water basketball with Daddy, and I could not stop smiling as I watched them.
I also loved that towels were provided. I could walk up to the towel counter, scan my room key, and grab what we needed. As long as we returned the towels, everything was simple and stress-free.
Sweet moments in between the excitement
One thing I want every mom to know is that traveling with a large family does not have to feel chaotic. I know how it can be. You pack everything. You plan everything. You try to anticipate every need before it even happens. Sometimes it feels like you are doing all the work and everyone else is having all the fun. I have been there. I understand that feeling deeply. But at Great Wolf Lodge, something shifts. The moment you arrive, the pressure you normally carry starts to melt away because everything you need is already waiting for you. You do not have to create the fun. You simply get to walk into it.
In between all the big moments, we found these beautiful little pockets of joy that reminded me why the trip was worth it. We wandered into the Great Wolf Candy Company and let the kids fill their cups with their favorite treats. We spent time in the Northern Lights Arcade, where the kids battled for tickets and laughed so hard they could barely stand up straight. We went bowling at Ten Paw Alley, and it felt so good to watch all the kids enjoy something together without me having to manage every detail.
Tru built his own bear at Build-A-Bear Workshop, and I stood there watching him place the tiny heart inside, knowing this was a memory he would carry forever. The older kids ran through the lodge with their MagiQuest wands, waving them at every station with so much excitement that I could not help but smile.
These moments were not rushed. They were not stressful. They were not the kind of moments where you feel like you are just trying to keep up. They were slow and sweet and full of connection. They reminded me that when you choose the right place to travel, you do not have to fight for family time. It simply happens. And you get to enjoy it too.
Evenings filled with memories
Evenings at Great Wolf Lodge felt like the kind of nights I used to dream about when my kids were younger. The kind where everyone is happy. The kind where no one is asking what we are doing next because the fun is already planned for you. The kind where you feel like you are on vacation too, not just supervising one. We spent our evenings trick-or-treating through the lodge, watching the kids collect candy with wide eyes and full hearts. We danced together at the Monster Bash Party, and I remember looking around at all six of my children, thinking, ” This is what it feels like to slow down and be present. We had family dinners where no one was rushed, and no one was distracted. We ended our nights with ice cream smiles and sleepy little faces that told me they had lived their day fully.
There was something so comforting about knowing that every evening held something special. I did not have to plan it. I did not have to organize it. I did not have to carry the mental load that usually comes with traveling as a big family. Great Wolf Lodge made it easy for us to simply show up and enjoy each other.
By the time we crawled into bed each night, our hearts felt full in a way that only comes from shared experiences. We were tired, but it was the good kind of tired.
