As a parent, it is my responsibility to provide my children with the best resources and tools to help them succeed in life. This includes ensuring that my children know their worth, so that they can be successful in all aspects of their lives. As heartbreaking events continue to transpire towards the black community, it is important to remind my children that they are all unique and beautiful. Through constant prayer, affirmations, reassurance, and empowering “black” books, my children are able to feel powerful and proud in their own skin.
Building Confidence in Black Children
One way I have been able to empower my black children is by purchasing books specifically for them. These books showcase positive images of black people doing great things such as doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs etc. Seeing such images helps boost self-confidence in young minds because these images show them what they can become one day if they put forth the effort today. I also purchase t-shirts and other materials that showcase black power; this helps them understand that their BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL! Thank you Simon Kids for sharing these amazing books with our family.
Reinforcing Positive Behaviors
Another way I ensure that my children understand their value is by reinforcing positive behaviors at home. For example, when we watch movies together or read stories together I make sure to point out characters of color who are portrayed positively or who do good things even when faced with adversity. This helps them see themselves in a positive light while also giving them examples of how they should conduct themselves.
Lastly, I constantly pray for and affirm my children as well as remind them of how amazing they are each day. By doing this on a daily basis, it reinforces positivity within our household which creates a safe space for learning and growth regardless of race or gender identity. Doing such provides us an opportunity to talk about current events openly but not without compassion for those affected by injustice or oppression due to race or gender identity.
Soon there will come a day where the suppression of the black community comes too an end. Until then I will continue to help empower my children (who are the future), with faith that one day they will help make that change. It is important for me as a parent to remember that I am responsible for helping instill values into each one of my children so that no matter what happens outside our home, inside our home we are secure in knowing our value comes from God himself! My job is not only to protect them physically but spiritually as well; this means having conversations about social injustices while also reminding them (and showing) how beautiful they truly are!
